Former Surgeon General Koop Honored

Hanover, New Hampshire - October 13, 2009

A former United States Surgeon General who now resides in the Upper Valley was honored Tuesday by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

C. Everett Koop served as Surgeon General in the 1980s-- appointed by Ronald Reagan. Tuesday, he received an honorary fellowship from the distinguished college, which is located in Scotland.

Koop is a 1937 graduate of Dartmouth College.

He was called a pioneer in the field of pediatric surgery before accepting the fellowship.

"It is one other evidence of the unification of our two countries. And many philosophical things. But we have enjoyed together the golden era of surgery. I know they are glad to be part of it and I am certainly glad to join them," Koop said.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh dates back to 1505, which makes it the oldest surgical corporation in the world. The college awards one or two fellowships a year but rarely do surgeons from the United States receive the honor.
