Burlington, Vermont - October 14, 2009
Burlington police are investigating an act of vandalism at a local elementary school.
The garden at the Sustainability Academy at the Lawrence Barnes School was vandalized sometime over the weekend. Tomatillos, mums, and other vegetables and flowers the students planted were torn up from the roots. A rock wall that volunteers had built this spring was also torn apart.
"It was really sad to see especially because it's only been about six months," said Sarah Kadden, an educator at the Sustainability Academy. "The kids were all ready to fix it and we're excited to show the community what we're made of. We'll come together and fix it and grow more."
The school is hosting a community meeting Thursday at 6 p.m. to talk about the vandalism and plans to rebuild the garden.
