NYACK, N.Y. (AP) - State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli will be in Westchester County today to talk about the state pension fund's investment in a company that makes college textbooks available for free online.
Flat World Knowledge allows professors to browse its online catalog and pick out a book for their students. The instructor can modify the book if needed. Students then log on to access the online text, free of charge.
For a fee, students can print out chapters or pages, get audio, or order a bound copy of the book. There are also low-cost study aids such as podcast study guides, flash cards, and online quizzes.
The company says 38,000 students at 350 colleges are enrolled to use Flat World textbooks for the fall semester.
