A Vermont lawmaker plans to introduce legislation that would make obtaining medical marijuana as easy as accessing any other prescription drug.
Democratic Rep. Christopher Bray of New Haven says 170 Vermonters are legally registered to use marijuana to treat medical conditions. But obtaining that can often be a challenge for people too sick or otherwise unable to grow their own. He is drafting a bill that would allow pharmacies to dispense marijuana.
"For these people it is medicine, we recognize it as such, let's treat it like other medicines and make it available for appropriate users on the state registry through pharmacies," Bray said.
Bray's announcement was prompted by President Obama's statement that the feds would not prosecute people for possession of medical marijuana if they are in compliance with state laws. Right now Vermont is one of 14 states that allow medical marijuana.
