Sanders seeks to restore VSH funding

Associated Press - October 21, 2009 6:15 AM ET

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Sen. Bernie Sanders says he's hopeful the federal government will recertify the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury and restore its federal funding.

The loss of federal certification - first declared in 2003 - has cost Vermont about $10 million a year in funding for the hospital at a time when the state's budget is under increasing distress.

Sanders, a Vermont independent, on Tuesday convened a meeting of state and federal officials to work out what steps Vermont must take to improve the Waterbury hospital and regain certification and funding.

In July, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, citing concerns about supervision of a single patient, again denied certification for Vermont's only state-run mental hospital.
