Vigil Honors 16-year-old Murder Victim

Essex, Vermont - October 22, 2008

An emotional memorial, Thursday night, for a 16-year-old girl allegedly killed by her aunt last week. Nearly 100 people gathered in Essex to honor Shatavia "CeCe" Alford.

Teenagers hugged each other and cried as they shared their favorite memories of their slain friend.

"Her smile, definitely her smile," said Steven Gonyea, who recounted nights of chatting with CeCe online and walking her to class. "She had the most beautifulest smile I've ever seen."

The Essex High School sophomore, who everyone called CeCe, was stabbed in the chest last Thursday. Her aunt, Latonia Congress, has been charged with second degree murder. Prosecutors say the two were in an argument about laundry.

CeCe's friends are struggling with the circumstances surrounding her death.

"Angry. Frustration. Lonely, definitely feel lonely," said Gonyea.

Friends say CeCe was the type of person who could make you smile no matter how bad of a day you were having. It seemed everyone at the memorial could claim her as a best friend.

"She was strong. She didn't care who you were she was there for you all the time," said Kimberly Hesson, who organized the vigil along with another of CeCe's friends.

CeCe loved to dance and sing. Gonyea said she wanted to be a counselor one day, working with special needs children. All of her friends commented on her good looks.

"CeCe was a beautiful, most gorgeous young lady I have ever seen," said Hesson.

Loved by many, CeCe Alford will be missed by an entire community.
