Barre Town, Vermont - October 23, 2009
An East Barre chicken farmer and town officials will try to find a way to avoid ruffling each other's feathers during a court-ordered mediation next week.
Kathy Rubacalba has nearly 100 chickens at her quarter-acre home on Church Street. She sells the eggs through her company, Laid in Vermont, but the noise and smell bothers neighbors.
Rubacalba recently filed a lawsuit against the town after three of her roosters were taken by officials without a warrant just one day before Rubacalba was to appear in court, requesting an injunction on an order limiting her to one rooster. She argues she needs three roosters to maintain her coop. A judge ordered the birds returned, granted the injunction and called for a mediation, which is scheduled for Tuesday.
A man from Atlanta who calls himself 'The Chicken Whisperer' on his radio show could be called as an expert witness. Andy Schneider has been following the dispute and feels he could offer both tips about the correct way to raise chickens.
