Aunt Held Without Bail in Niece's Murder

Burlington, Vermont - October 23, 2009

An Essex Junction woman accused of murdering her niece will not get out on bail.

Latonia Congress, 30, is charged with second-degree murder for stabbing 16-year-old Shatavia "CeCe" Alford.

Congress wants to be set free on bail pending trial. But Friday, Judge Michael Kupersmith said no. He noted that there is strong evidence of guilt. He also expressed concern that Congress might flee, since she does not have strong ties to the community and her husband has interfered with the police investigation.
