Johnson, Vermont - October 23, 2009
Johnson State College is examining its security procedures after a man tried to kidnap a student there Monday.
The female student was walking back to campus after dark when a man jumped out of the bushes and hit her on the head. The victim started screaming and the suspect took off.
Police later arrested Jimmie Emerson, 18, of Johnson, and charged him with attempted kidnapping.
"It was the best that could have come from an awful situation and the student in question did a great job of taking care of herself," Johnson State College President Barbara Murphy said.
College officials will now take a look at whether the campus could be better lit. The school also lacks emergency call boxes that are common at much larger schools and the school will evaluate whether upgrades are needed.
