Accidental Shooting Injures Turkey Hunter

Bradford, Vermont - October 25, 2009

A Bradford man is hospitalized in serious condition after he was accidentally shot by a fellow hunter.

It happened around 8:15 a.m. Sunday in a corn field in Bradford. State police say 22 -year-old Ryan Terrill was sitting in a camouflage chair just inside the wood line when he was mistakenly shot by 49-year-old Richard Sylvester of Topsham. Sylvester was hunting for turkeys from the road. Neither of the men knew each other.

"We do have isolated incidents that occur each year but there hasn't really been a drastic increase in that. But, the big things for hunters to remember is they need to identify their target before they pull the trigger," said Vermont Game Warden, Lt. Ken Denton.

Terrill was last listed in serious condition with bird shot wounds to his torso and head. Richard Sylvester told police he believed he was shooting at a turkey. Officials say the accident investigation will be reviewed by the Orange County State's Attorney.
