Red Cross to train volunteers for NYC Marathon

Associated Press - October 26, 2009 1:25 PM ET

NEW YORK (AP) - The American Red Cross of Greater New York is training hundreds of volunteers to help staff first aid stations at the New York City Marathon.

The Red Cross is holding a training session for volunteers Monday evening at a midtown hotel.

The organization says more than 250 volunteers and staff trained in first aid will assist medical professionals along Sunday's marathon route.

Additionally, 25 Red Cross staff and volunteers will work with the New York Road Runners medical team inside the medical tents and at the finish line.

Last year three deaths were connected to the marathon. A 58-year-old Brazilian man died of a heart attack after crossing the finish line. Another man died several hours later and a third man collapsed during the race and died days later.
