Help for Guard Families

Colchester, Vermont - October 30, 2009

Families left behind by their deployed soldiers have a place to turn for help.

The Family Readiness Program provides services for families of guardsmen and women. The headquarters is at Camp Johnson in Colchester, but there are five offices across the state, with plans to start five more.

The Family Readiness Program is a one-stop-shop for information, resources, referrals and most importantly support, from mental health counseling, to simple things, like lawn care.

"The goal is to help the families deal with the deployment, help them thru and help them reunite when the soldier returns and make everyone aware of services and there are a lot of them out there," said Daneen Roy, coordinator of The Family Readiness Program.

Daneen Roy says the biggest concern she's hearing right now from Guard families -- is the escalating violence in Afghanistan.
