Winooski, Vermont - November 2, 2009
Advocates for the homeless celebrated the development of a new veterans' complex Monday in Winooski.
Housing Vermont and the Committee on Temporary Shelter are working on a building that will provide 12 permanent and 17 short-term housing units. COTS estimates there are 125 homeless veterans in Vermont, and says the new building will also provide information on medical care, and job training.
Kevin Maloney, an advisor to COTS on issues facing homeless veterans, says, "It's very important to remember what George Washington said, a nation that forgets its veterans and doesn't take care of them will soon have no one to defend it."
$1.2 million from the Department of Veterans Affairs will help build the West Canal Street facility. It's scheduled to open next Fall.
