BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A Buffalo-area county sheriff at the center of a controversy over management of local jails has been elected to a second term.
Incumbent Republican Timothy Howard defeated Town of Cheektowaga police Capt. John Glascott, a Democrat, in Tuesday's election for Erie County sheriff.
Howard received 53 percent of the vote compared to 47 percent for Glascott, with 88 percent of the vote counted.
Glascott's campaign focused on allegations of mismanagement at the county jails in Alden and downtown Buffalo. The jails are the target of state and federal lawsuits alleging mistreatment of inmates.
Last month, an inmate escaped from his cell at the downtown facility and spent two hours on the building's roof before surrendering.
