Putney General Store Fire Ruled Suspicious, Investigation Underway

Putney, Vermont - November 5, 2009

Vermont State Police arson investigators believe the fire that destroyed the Putney General Store was suspicious and the criminal investigation is getting underway.

Vermont's oldest general store went up in flames Sunday night. A neighboring jewelry story and apartments were also damaged. The loss is estimated at close to a million dollars.

The 200-year-old store was undergoing renovations from a previous fire last year. The Putney Historical Society, which owns the building, plans to start the rebuilding project again.

Investigators have already spent two days searching the rubble with the help of a fire-investigating dog trained to sniff out accelerants.
