Pownal Woman Denies Charges in Crash

Bennington, Vermont - November 4, 2009

A Bennington County woman pleaded not guilty to all of the charges against her stemming from a car accident that killed unborn twins.

Kelly Cook, 22, of Pownal, is charged with drugged driving, gross negligence and possession of prescription drugs. She was released on bail and must check-in with the police department and drug counselors.

Police say Cook was speeding on Route 7 in Bennington in August when she crossed the center line and slammed head-on into another vehicle. Four people were injured and a woman in the other car lost her unborn twins. Because Vermont law does not define a fetus as a "person" Cook will not be charged in the deaths of the babies.
