Montpelier, Vermont - November 5, 2009
A car accident this summer that killed a pregnant woman's unborn twins could lead to new legislation for protecting the unborn.
Patricia Blair was six months pregnant when she was injured in a head-on collision on Route 7 in Bennington. Her unborn twins did not survive.
Police say the driver of the other car-- Kelly Cook-- was under the influence of drugs. But Cook cannot be charged with causing a fatality, because Vermont law does not define a fetus as a person.
Now Bennington County Senator Dick Sears says he is drafting legislation that would address the untimely death of fetuses. Sears says the bill will be carefully written to avoid the divisive issue of abortion.
