Montpelier, Vermont - November 6, 2009
Vermont State Treasurer Jeb Spaulding wants to move some teacher retirement costs from the state onto local school districts. The Democrat says the move would take pressure off of state funds. He says it would also more accurately show the cost of education and better connect decisions about teacher salaries and long-term decisions.
It could mean a 2-cent increase in the property tax rate.
A committee is looking at the proposal.
