ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Politicians, residents and emergency responders are holding a rally at the Capitol today to call for immediate action on deteriorating bridges and roads.
The rally at 10 a.m. outside the Capitol will be led by senators Betty Little, Hugh Farley, Roy McDonald, and Tom Libous, and Assemblywoman Teresa Sayward.
They say the recent closure of the Crown Point Bridge between New York and Vermont over Lake Champlain highlights an escalating crisis, as bridges and roads will continue to deteriorate and fail without immediate intervention.
The legislators say more than 100 New York state bridges have a safety rating worse than the bridge in Crown Point.
After undergoing work much of the summer, the Crown Point bridge was closed suddenly Oct. 16 because of safety concerns about the concrete supports. Officials say it must be demolished and replaced by a new one.
