Albany, New York - November 10, 2009
New York lawmakers are returning Albany Tuesday for a special session.
Governor David Paterson ordered the session to enact proposed budget cuts to tackle the over $3 billion deficit. The areas hardest hit would be schools, the state university system and health care.
"At this moment all of us assembled in this chamber stand as the last defense to our state undergoing a downward economic spiral that threatens to engulf the future of generations of New Yorkers," said Paterson, D-New York.
Paterson is also asking the state Senate to vote on a bill legalizing same-sex marriage. That bill was approved by the Assembly in the spring.
