Addison, Vermont - November 10, 2009
The decision to tear down the Champlain Bridge is bittersweet for people who live in the area.
The bridge opened to great fanfare in 1929. Vermont Governor Weeks and New York Governor Franklin Delano Roosevelt met at the center of the span.
The bridge was an engineering marvel-- especially for people in rural Vermont and New York.
Erwin Clark of the Addison Historical Society recounted a story about his friend's first experience on the bridge. "They got to the top of the bridge and the traffic stopped and he got out of the car to kinda lean on the edge and look over and then he looked up and here was an airplane coming at him."
Clark says the bridge is as vital to the region as it was 80 years ago.
You can hear more about the bridge from Clark Wednesday on the Channel 3 News Early Morning.
