South Burlington Students Honor Veterans

South Burlington, Vermont - November 11, 2009

Communities all over the country are pausing to honor the nation's veterans.

The South Burlington High School chorus opened one of the ceremonies Wednesday morning. A thousand students filled the gym where several veterans were recognized for their service. The focus was on the families, who will share in the sacrifice when nearly 1,500 Vermont National Guard soldiers embark on their upcoming year-long deployment to Afghanistan.

"In such a deployment, we have multiple heroes," said Caitlyn Bishop, a student speaker. "We have the soldiers serving their country at war, putting their lives on the line. We have the families who are living the pain of being without a loved one and are being overworked, having to take on multiple jobs because their lived one is not there to help."

"This deployment will tough every corner of Vermont, affect hundreds of families and employers, and will be a very trying and difficult year for all of us," said Brig. Gen. Jonathan Farnham.

This is the second year that the high school and South Burlington first responders have held this ceremony recognizing the sacrifice that comes with serving the country when called.
