Matthew VoogBennington, Vermont - November 12, 2009
An Iraq war veteran from Bennington will spend 18 months to four-and-a-half years behind bars for animal cruelty and assaulting his ex-wife.
Thirty-one-year-old Matthew Voog pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of animal cruelty, attempted simple assault and reckless endangerment, as well as several parole violations.
Many of those charges stem from an incident in May when police say a drunken Voog put his ex, 25-year-old Chrystyna Pasbrig, in a choke hold and held a knife to her. Pasbrig wasn't hurt in the attack, which reportedly lasted several hours.
Voog and Pasbrig also faced 10 animal cruelty charges after police discovered a number of starved dogs at their house in March. Those charges against Pasbrig have been dropped.
The judge said Voog's legal problems didn't begin until a year-and-a-half ago when he returned from his tour in Iraq with post traumatic stress disorder. A number of felonies were dropped to misdemeanors because Voog would lose his military benefits with a felony conviction.
