Middlebury, Vermont - November 13, 2009
The Vermont Labor Department is planning a job fair next week for Addison County-- prompted by Friday's closing of a Middlebury manufacturer.
Monahan Filaments is laying off 70 employees because of a decline in business, growing competition, and rising costs. The company had already laid off 54 workers in April.
Organizers of the job fair say they hope next week's event will help some of those workers land new positions.
Ann Carnell, a business outreach specialist at the Vt. Labor Dept., said, "The primary reason is to help out the folks at Monahan's that the plant is closing today on Friday the 13th. There's going to be about 70 people that will be unemployed so we're trying to help out the community, helps out the employees from Monahan's, open it up of course to the general public for anyone that might be looking for work."
The job fair is Tuesday, November 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the American Legion in Middlebury. It's free and open to the public. Thirty employers are expected to attend, and there is still room for other employers to participate.
