NH city getting rid of old woodstoves

Associated Press - November 15, 2009 9:05 AM ET

KEENE, N.H. (AP) - Rebate vouchers worth $1,000 are still available as part of a woodstove changeout program for Keene, N.H.. The vouchers go to residents who are willing to replace old stoves with new ones certified by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Keene is the first community in New Hampshire to take part in the national program. The goal is to replace 100 old woodstoves with the new ones, or with pellet stoves or ones with vented gas-heating appliances. Over half the vouchers have been issued.

Keene's air quality suffers when wood smoke becomes trapped around the city during certain winter weather conditions. The rebate money comes from a large multistate settlement with power companies.
