Burlington, Vermont - November 15, 2009
Senator Patrick Leahy is defending the Obama administration's decision to try five key Al-Qaeda members in New York City, just blocks from the site of the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
The Vermont Democrat appeared Sunday morning on the CBS program Face the Nation. He said he has faith in American judges. "They know how to keep decorum in their court. If Khaled Sheik Mohammed wants to stand up and say, as he did in Guantanamo, 'I committed all these murders, I did all these things,' fine. If I was a prosecutor I'd just sit there, let that jury hear it. Because he's going to be convicted. That's the important thing. And we show the world that our judicial system works," Leahy said.
Leahy says the New York trials are justified because the murders were committed in America.
