NYC man, 75, dies retrieving phone from house fire

Associated Press - November 16, 2009 8:05 PM ET

NEW YORK (AP) - A 75-year-old New York City man died after he helped his family escape a burning home but then ran back into the house to retrieve a cell phone.

Police say responding firefighters pulled Nathan Lagree from the Queens house fire early Monday, but he died a short time later at a local hospital. Witnesses told the Daily News that Lagree had returned to the single-family house to grab his cell phone.

Police say Lagree's wife and daughter were also hospitalized with smoke inhalation and minor burns.

Fire officials say the blaze appears to have been started by an electrical fire and was not suspicious.
