Sen. Schumer seeks ban on chemical in beverage containers

Associated Press - November 17, 2009 3:15 AM ET

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Senator Charles Schumer is proposing a ban on the chemical bisphenol-A in food and drink containers for kids aged three and under.

Schumer unveiled the proposal in Rochester Monday, following a Consumer Reports' study showing that BPA is in a wider range of products and in higher concentrations than previously thought.

Proponents of a ban argue that BPA poses health risks that may affect reproduction and neural development as a result of early exposure.

Schumer's BPA-Free Kids Act would ban the sale of children's food or beverage containers made of BPA and increase penalties for manufacturers, importers and stores found to be in violation.

The bill would provide more funding for research on the health effects of BPA.
