Ground breaks on energy storage plant

Associated Press - November 19, 2009 3:15 AM ET

STEPHENTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Ground breaks today in upstate New York on an array of flywheel batteries designed to store spare power from New York's electrical grid and transmit it back when needed.

The seven-acre facility is being built in Stephentown, near the Massachusetts line.

Each flywheel battery will weigh a ton, levitate in a sealed chamber and spin up to 16,000 times a minute. The batteries will store energy when there is too much in the system and send it back when production is lower.
