Police: Underage Drinking a Factor in Fatal Crash

Plainfield, Vermont - November 19, 2009

Police now say underage drinking may be to blame for a car crash that killed a Montpelier teen.

Police say on June 23, 17-year-old Caidin McKeever was driving on Route 2 in Plainfield when he left the road and collided head-on with a tree. He died at the scene. Two of his passengers were severely injured with cuts to the face and chest fractures. Two other passengers suffered minor injuries. None of the people in the car were wearing seatbelts.

Now police say toxicology reports show McKeever had a BAC of .08 and several others in the car also had alcohol in their systems. Police say the group was at the Plainfield Recreational Field and a private residence prior to the crash. They're currently investigating where the alcohol came from and who supplied it.

A white tractor trailer truck was in the area at the time and police say it may have also been a factor. More details about the vehicle were never identified.
