PLAINFIELD, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation is getting ready to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first state forest.
Monday marks the centennial of the state's purchase of a 642-acre parcel of land in Plainfield that became known as the L.R. Jones State Forest.
The Vermont Division of Forestry was created in 1909.
The first state forest was named for L.R. Jones, a botany professor at the University of Vermont, credited with creating the state's tree nursery. He was also the first president of the Vermont Forestry Association.
The Rutland Herald says Gov. Jim Douglas is due to present a plaque Monday to the town of Plainfield and to add the forest to the State Register of Historic Places.
