Plainfield, Vermont - November 23, 2009
Today marks a major milestone for Vermont's state forests.
One hundred years ago, the state bought 642 acres of land in Plainfield, which became Vermont's first state forest. The L.R. Jones State Forest is named for a University of Vermont botany professor who created the state's tree nursery.
The state now oversees over 300,000 acres of state forest in 80 towns. Today, Gov. Jim Douglas will present Plainfield with a plaque and he'll add the forest to the State Register of Historic Places.
The state is also holding a photo contest featuring pictures of Vermont's state forests by local photographers. You can cast your vote for your favorite until Wednesday at www.vtfpr.org/htm/for_cen_photocontest.cfm.
