Marsh Faces Reduced Charges at Murder Trial

Burlington, Vermont - November 24, 2009

A Vermont National Guard member will face reduced charges when he stands trial for allegedly killing his girlfriend.

Twenty-four-year-old Stephen Marsh is accused of shooting 28-year-old Laura Jean Cousens in the head at a Winooski apartment last summer. Police have not given a motive, but Marsh's lawyers say it was an accident.

Marsh initially pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder charges. On Monday, however, he was re-arraigned on second-degree murder charges. Chittenden County State's Attorney T.J. Donovan won't say why he sought the reduced charge.

If convicted on the new charge, Marsh could face 20 years to life in prison. Marsh is currently on leave from the Guard pending the outcome of the trial. Trial is expected to start on Monday.
