Hunting accident leads to arrest on endangerment charge

Associated Press - November 26, 2009 3:05 AM ET

LUMBERLAND, N.Y. (AP) - State police charged a 52-year-old Long Island man with felony reckless endangerment after a hunting incident in Sullivan County about 65 miles northwest of New York City.

Police say Robert Robar of Valley Stream was hunting in the town of Lumberland Wednesday morning when he mistook another hunter for a deer and shot him with his rifle.

After realizing his mistake, Robar helped 50-year-old Terry Pelton of Sparrow Bush out of the woods and drove him to a hospital in Port Jervis. Pelton was later airlifted to Westchester Medical Center for emergency pelvic surgery.

Robar was arraigned in Lumberland town court and sent to Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $10,000.00 cash bail.
