NEW YORK (AP) - 1 of the oldest surviving institutions of the early Dutch settlement of New York is making amends for its role in helping to relegate Native Americans to the margins of society.
The Collegiate Church and representatives of the Lenape (Len-NAH'-pee) tribe are holding a ceremony of reconciliation on Friday in lower Manhattan. The event also marks the first Native American Heritage Day.
Collegiate Church was established in 1628 in New Amsterdam, which is now New York.
It was known as the "company church" of the Dutch merchants whose trading post helped develop the city's economic power.
