Distress Flares Prompt Lake Champlain Search

Alburgh, Vermont - December 1, 2009

Rescue crews spent hours overnight searching Lake Champlain following reports of several distress flares.

The Alburgh Fire Department was called in by the Coast Guard after receiving several distress signals coming from the lake near Alburgh Springs. A number of agencies from Vermont and Canada, including Border Patrol, were standing by during the search. Fire crews say the late hour and weather made it difficult to see if anything was out there.

"We deployed resources, including a Homeland Security helicopter which started picking up a signal which never amounted to anything," said Taylor Gotchall with the Alburgh Fire Department. "We didn't find anything."

The search was called off early this morning, but the Coast Guard will be monitoring the situation. Anyone with information is asked to call local authorities.
