Distress flares prompt Lake Champlain search

Associated Press - December 1, 2009 6:45 AM ET

ALBURGH, Vt. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard is planning to monitor northern Lake Champlain after a search prompted by two distress flares turned up nothing.

The Coast Guard called the Alburgh Fire Department after receiving several distress signals coming from Alburgh Springs, just south of the Canadian border.

It's unclear what time the signals were received.

WCAX-television says a number of agencies from Vermont and Canada were standing by during the search.

Taylor Gotchall of the Alburgh Fire Department says a U.S. Border Patrol helicopter picked up a signal, but searchers didn't find anything.

The search was called off early Tuesday.
