NY man died after plow got stuck on upstate train tracks

Associated Press - December 11, 2009 3:05 AM ET

NORTHUMBERLAND, N.Y. (AP) - A freight train slammed into a snow plow at an ungated crossing, killing a plow operator, after the truck got struck on the tracks.

James Shea was operating the town of Northumberland truck's wing plow when he was killed in the Wednesday morning crash.

The Saratoga County Sheriff's department says the truck was crossing the tracks and got stuck. The intersection has no warning devices and is crossed by a dead-end road.

Sergeant Richard Washburn says 68-year-old Shea died of direct trauma to the head. The truck's driver - Kerry Garnsey - was in stable condition at Glens Falls Hospital Thursday. The 53-year-old is expected to survive.

A Canadian Pacific railroad spokesman says the two train operators were not hurt.
