Vigil held for Mexican farm worker

Burlington, Vermont - December 23, 2009

A vigil was held in Burlington Wednesday for a young Mexican farm worker who was killed in a tragic farm accident. It happened Tuesday at the Howrigan Farm in Fairfield. Police say Oveth Santis Cruz, 17, was killed when part of his body got caught in some farm equipment.

The Vermont Workers' Center held the vigil to commemorate Santis Cruz's life and to promote immigration reform.

"These workers have to live in fear of deportation and don't enjoy the rights that you and I do. And this is all due to a broken and unjust and oppressive U.S. immigration system because they are forced to live and in this case die in the shadow of our Vermont dairy farms," said Brendan O'Neill of the Vermont Workers' Center.

Officials with the Vermont Workers' Center say Santis Cruz's family and friends avoided the vigil fearing deportation.
