Court papers: Robbery suspect stashed loot in body

St. Johnsbury, Vermont - December 30, 2009

A Northeast Kingdom woman was in court Wednesday facing bank robbery charges.

Police say Paige Ely, 20, of Lyndon, phoned in a bogus bomb threat to Lyndon State College Tuesday afternoon, and then robbed the Passumpsic Bank in Lyndon, making off with $5,300. Investigators tracked clothing found near the scene to a motel where Ely was staying. Court papers show when she was taken in for questioning, she was complaining of severe pain. Emergency room staff discovered nearly $2,800 hidden in the suspect's vagina.

Prosecutors worried Ely would try to flee Vermont because she does not have a job or an address, aside from the motel.

"It does give the court pause to consider whether Ms. Ely will show up. I haven't heard much about relatives in the area," Vt. District Court Judge M. Kathleen Manley said.

According to court papers, more money and hypodermic needles were found in Ely's motel room. She pled innocent to the charges, and is being held on $25,000 bail.
