Lost hiker leads to rescue operation on Mt. Mansfield

Stowe, Vermont – January 13, 2010

Troopers say 26-year-old Joshua Carter of South Burlington set out for a hike from Underhill state park, but got lost upon reaching the summit.  He had his cell phone and called for help. Crews talked him over the mountain so he could descend on the Stowe side, and went up in snowmobiles to meet him.

"When he left the weather conditions were much different when he got to the top. He got turned around due to the snow.  He's not injured, appears that he properly prepared for the weather. He does have food, warm clothing, and water," said State Trooper Paul Ravelin.  "It's important that he took the necessary precautions to be prepared for an instance like this."

Stowe Mountain Rescue did eventually find Carter near "the Chin" portion of the summit around 10pm.  He was not injured.
