A second group from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is heading to Haiti.
Nine nurses and one doctor are working with Partners in Health, an international relief organization.
They are bringing loads of medical supplies with them. Their primary task will be to perform surgery. But team leader Dr. Jim Geiling says they've spent little time preparing for what they are about to encounter in a country that has already lost an estimated 200,000 lives.
"I don't think any of us are really well prepared to see it," Geiling said. "Some people on the team have actually been there before and know what Haiti looks like on a good day. But having said that, a lot of our focus right now is just trying to get all of our personal effect in order just to get out the door. I think once we get on the plane, we will take a deep breath and change our focus from leaving to arriving and what our mission is going to be."
The first group of doctors and surgeons from DHMC arrived in Haiti on Sunday. Each group plans to offer care in the country for seven to ten days before returning home.
