Police: Lawyers stonewalled inmate death investigation

Ashley Ellis Ashley Ellis

Rutland, Vermont - March 8, 2010

New details have emerged about an investigation into the death of a female inmate at the St. Albans prison last year.

Twenty-three-year-old Ashley Ellis of Rutland died in August, two days into a 30-day prison sentence for a driving violation.

According to police reports obtained by the Rutland Herald, lawyers for a private contractor hired to provide medical care to inmates at the state's prisons told its employees not to talk to police investigators. It also shows a missed phone call may be the reason Ellis didn't receive needed medication.

A state medical examiner found Ellis died because she was denied medication for her severe eating disorder. Vermont prosecutors found no criminal intent or criminal negligence, so no criminal charges will be filed in connection with her death.
