Ben & Jerry's had quite a few things to celebrate as they kicked off their annual Free Cone Day. On his second day of work, Jostein Solheim was introduced as the company's new CEO, and he got down to business by scooping ice cream for the hungry Vermonters standing in line for a treat.

"This is a lot more than ice cream," Solheim said. "This is how we can as a business, make a difference in the community we operate in and to the environment and that's what I find really thrilling about working in the Ben & Jerry's family."

As lines wrapped around the Burlington scoop shop's building, winter Olympian and Vermont native Hannah Teter stopped by to scoop her own signature flavor.

"Well I heard Maple Blondie beat Elton John's flavor, so it's a claim to fame right there," Teter said.

"Well we're very excited to have Hannah here," Ben & Jerry's co-founder Jerry Greenfield said. "She's got her own flavor, Maple Blondie, which is incredible; she's donating all her proceeds to clean water programs, so we're so lucky to be associated with her."

"This is the best ice cream in the world," said Hasse Halley, who was getting a free cone. "You can go anywhere you want; you don't get ice cream like this."

And just as Ben & Jerry's Free cone day is a Vermont staple, Hannah Teter's contribution is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"That's always been motivation for me to want to do well and get out there," Teter said. "I donate all my contest winnings to help bring clean water to this town. It's just a different inspiration and a new path for me."

Part of Maple Blondie sales will go to Teter's charity which funds infrastructure improvements and humanitarian projects in Africa.

Helping those around the world, one scoop at a time.
