St. Albans Co-op Store joins Keep Local Farms

St. Albans, Vermont - April 30, 2010

The St. Albans Co-op Store announced Friday it will join the program Keep Local Farms. The co-op will donate 20 cents of every gallon of milk sold to the program.

Keep Local Farms is an effort to raise money for struggling dairy farmers. The University of Vermont, Allen Lumber and Hannaford are among other businesses and organizations that have joined the effort, which is New Englandwide. Money raised will go directly to farmers.

"This is really a time when we need to be working collaboratively and collectively as much as we can because I think on average, the community and the consumers recognize the importance of dairy farmers throughout this state," said Leon Berthiaume of the St. Albans Co-op.

"Keep Local Farms is meant to be a part of the solution, not the silver bullet to this difference in price versus cost of production, but keep local farms is a part of that solution that's active right now and farmers can take part to help themselves," said Diane Bothfeld, the deputy secretary of the Vt. Agriculture Agency.

The Agriculture Agency says 80 percent of Vermont dairy farmers have signed up for the program. Keep Local Farms hopes to deliver checks to dairy farmers twice a year, possibly starting this spring.
