Notorious drunk driver arrested again

Douglas Gardner Douglas Gardner

Highgate, Vermont - May 15, 2010

A Franklin County man with a deadly drunk driving record is back behind bars.

Police say 54-year-old Douglas Gardner crashed his car Saturday afternoon on Route 78 in Highgate. Gardner got out of prison just last month for a fatal DWI crash back in 1991. But Police on Saturday said despite his lifetime driving suspension, he was drunk behind the wheel again.

Douglas served nearly 20 years for killing Billy Labier of St. Albans. At the time he was on probation for his 7th drunk driving conviction. But he drove drunk again, crossed the center line in a stolen truck and crashed head-on into Labier's car.

No one was hurt in Saturdays accident. Gardner is behind bars pending $50 thousand dollars bail.
