A new batch of doctors graduated from UVM's medical school Sunday. Among them was a West Glover native who is making history in her field.
"I'm very excited, somewhat anxious. This is sort of the first time we'll be directly responsible for patients and that holds a lot of weight," said Jessie Willow Janowski right before her commencement ceremony.
Janowski grew up on a commune in West Glover. Now she is now a doctor that is proud to have completed medical school in a state she loves.
"Its great to be a Vermonter staying at Fletcher Allen which is rare, and its also not a field that has a lot of women in it," she says.
This summer Jessie will begin an orthopedic surgery residency at Fletcher Allen. Only three female physicians currently work in the department. The new M.D. is looking forward to giving back to those who took care of her.
"It will be great to be a part of my community this is something that I've been wanting to do for a long time is see my neighbors come in and be able to help them get back to their jobs, get back to their family," she says.
As one of 106 medical students walking across the threshold to become a doctor, she reflects on the people of the Northeast Kingdom who she says, were vital to her upbringing.
"That was a big part of me learning what was important to me in life and the joy of giving back to even that small community and that small town. Its so easy to see your impact," says Janowski.
It is a lesson the entire class of 2010 will soon discover.
