Fix for errors in Vt. sex offender registry

Waterbury, Vermont - August 18, 2010

Vermont's Public Safety Department says it's ironing out the kinks in the sex offender registry.

The Legislature ordered an audit of the registry before offenders' home addresses get posted. That report found several errors, including names that didn't belong on the list.

Public Safety Commissioner Tom Tremblay says the glitches have all been fixed and his department is developing new policies for managing the system. He'll present his internal changes to lawmakers before putting offender's addresses online.

"It's obviously critical to everyone involved that we ensure the accuracy of the registry before we move forward," Tremblay said. "We want to work closely with the auditor's office and Legislature to ensure we have that level of accuracy that we all feel comfortable with."

Sex crime investigators do caution most assaults are committed by people who are not on offender registries, and often by people whom their victims know.
