Gov. David Paterson Gov. David Paterson

Albany, New York - August 31, 2010

The nation's first extensive domestic workers rights measure will become law in New York Tuesday.

Gov. David Paterson will sign the landmark legislation, which guarantees overtime pay and time off for those workers. It also offers protections against sexual harassment.

About 270,000 people, mostly female immigrants, are employed as domestic workers in New York. Advocacy groups say there are frequent reports of verbal and physical abuse by employers and two-thirds say they never get overtime pay.
