Primary votes ready for certification, recount looms

Montpelier, Vermont - August 31, 2010

Vermont will take the first step Tuesday toward determining the winner of the Democratic gubernatorial primary.

The initial votes are due to be certified at the secretary of state's office Tuesday morning. The unofficial count has Peter Shumlin leading Doug Racine by 197 votes. Once the votes are certified Racine will file his petition for a recount, the first ever in a statewide primary. However that process could take as long as two weeks since ballots and machines must be shipped to the courts where the recount will be done.

Another problem posed by this prolonged recount is that ballots can't be printed and mailed without an official nominee.
